The fate of Superintendent Mark Rendell may be decided April 9, when the Indian River School board meets to discuss whether to terminate the controversial superintendent’s contract during their board work session. The meeting, which will be held from noon to 3 p.m., is open to the public.

Board members will not cast an official vote during their work session, which is for discussion purposes only, Board Chairman Laura Zorc said. But if the board reaches a majority consensus, they could vote on the issue as early as their April 23 board meeting.

During a special board meeting on Tuesday, the board attempted to discuss a timeline for searching for a replacement for Rendell, who recently informed the board that he is applying for a new job outside the district. But after two hours of discussion, the board decided they needed to decide whether to fire him or offer him a contract extension to encourage him to stay.

“We need to do something,” said board member Mara Schiff. “We need to complete the process and let people know how we are going to move forward.”
