INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Residents and commuters near Interstate 95 might smell smoke from a 400-acre prescribed burn Friday.
A private rancher is burning off old vegetation so new crops can grow for livestock, Florida Forest Service spokeswoman Melissa Yunas said. The large ranch is located west of I-95 and north of State Road 60.
The Forest Service authorized the rancher to burn from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday. All prescribed burns -whether private or through an agency – must be approved by the Forest Service, Yunas said.
