Golf Carts of Vero loses 100 carts in ‘substantial’ fire

VERO BEACH — Golf Carts of Vero Beach on Aviation Boulevard suffered a “significant” fire Sunday valued at approximately $600,000.

Indian River County Fire Rescue spokesman Cory Richter said it was a “very bad fire” that caused “significant damage.”

However, no injuries were reported.

“The hardest part is not the loss of all 100 carts,” owner Tim Burklew posted on his Facebook page Sunday, “but our insurance will not cover the loss of income for our 11 staff members who need to feed their families until we are back open! Vero Beach if we ever needed anything we need your help now!”

Burklew explained that insurance will cover 50 percent of the shop’s inventory, but won’t cover staff salaries.

Still, Burklew said he plans to rebuild the business.

Richter said the call came in shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday and the fire was knocked down before 9:30 a.m.

“It was substantial,” Richter said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Office has been notified and will determine the cause.
