Louie James Harp, 85, Winter Beach
Louie James Harp, 85, passed away at home on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, in the care of Wuesthoff Hospice Care, Melbourne. He was born on June 5, 1932, in Winter Beach.
Louie graduated from Vero Beach High School in 1952. He worked at Fellsmere Farms and Pride Groves as a Supervisor in Grove Management. He was a member of the South Babcock Street Baptist Church, in Palm Bay.
He is survived by his wife, Arlie L. Harp; and his children, Bonnie (Emmett) Martin, Jeffrey (Estela) Harp, Janie (Philip) Lamb, and John (Tammy) Harp; his step-children, Leona Allen, John Fredell and Ray Fredell; his sister, Melba (Don) Wolverton; and two brothers, Paul (Joyce) Harp and Billy (Kathy) Harp.
Louie a/k/a “Popa Lou & Poppy” had 17 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly.
Louie was preceded in death by his parents, Paul Revere Harp and Beulah Mathis Harp; his son, Kevin Harp; and granddaughter, Crystal Mayfield.
Visitation will take place 2 – 3 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at Sebastian River Baptist Church followed by a Celebration of Louie’s Life at 3 p.m. with Rev. William Ruehman, Jr., Officiant.
Burial will follow at Winter Beach Cemetery, Winter Beach. Military Honors are conducted by Sebastian Area Veterans’ Honor Guard.
Arrangements are under the direction of Strunk Funeral Home, Sebastian.
Mary Theresa Bertone, 90, Vero Beach
Mary Theresa Bertone, 90, of Vero Beach, passed away April 21, 2018, at Indian River Medical Center. She was born July 3, 1927, in Woonsocket, R.I., and had been a resident of Florida’s Treasure Coast for 30 years, coming from Tariffville, Ct., where she resided for 32 years.
She was a devout Catholic and a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Prior to retirement, she worked in policy administration for Cigna Insurance for 25 years.
She leaves her memories to be cherished by her children, Katherine (Jamie) Bertone, of Covington, Ga., and Steven (Elisa) Bertone, of Cypress, Texas; granddaughter, Jami Bertone, of Cypress, Texas; sisters, Connie Tancrell, of Worcester, Mass., and Margaret Valis, of Shrewsbury, Mass.
She was predeceased by her husband, Louis Bertone, in 1996.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Friday, April 27, at St. Mary Parish, Uxbridge, Mass. Inurnment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Anthony J. Lombardo, 48, Vero Beach
Anthony J. Lombardo, 48, of Vero Beach, passed away April 25, 2018, at VNA Hospice House. He was born May 17, 1969, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had been a resident of Vero Beach since 1980, coming from Hollywood, Fla.
Anthony was a member of ARC of Indian River County and was a volunteer at the Indian River County Library.
He was an avid swimmer and competed in the Special Olympics.
He leaves his memories to be cherished by his mother, Anna Lombardo, of Vero Beach; sister, Luisa (Rich) Gale, of Naples, Fla.; and nephew, Nicholas Gale, of Naples.
He was predeceased by his father, Joseph Lombardo, in 2014.
A visitation will be held 10 – 11:30 a.m., Friday, April 27, at Cox Gifford Seawinds Funeral Home, Vero Beach.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Noon at St. Helen Catholic Church, Vero Beach, with burial to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Ft. Pierce.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA and Hospice Foundation, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, Fla. 32960.
Harold Eugene Kurzweg, 89, Vero Beach
Harold Eugene “Gene” Kurzweg, 89, of Vero Beach, passed away on April 23, 2018. Gene was born on Aug. 16, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn.
He was the oldest of Harold and Mary Kurzweg’s two sons and was preceded in death by his brother, David.
He graduated from White Bear Lake Senior High School (Minnesota) in 1946 when he promptly enlisted in the Navy to serve his Country during World War II.
Gene was a radio technician on the USS Gurke during the tail end of World War II and served in the Pacific arena during the post-War occupation of Japan.
Gene returned from the active duty and worked for a brief period for the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a data analyst while enrolled in college. During that time, he met and married Beverly Laird Feb. 5, 1950.
Bev passed away on April 17, 1994, after a long battle with breast cancer.
Gene and Bev had three children Barbara, Steven, and Scott.
Gene left college to support his family and worked as a manufacturer’s representative. In 1972, Gene decided he could better meet his family’s needs by starting his own business, which he successfully ran until 2015 when he suffered cardiac failure and his physician advised him it was time to retire.
While still employed as a manufacturer’s representative, Gene met Joyce Reinhart. Several years after Bev’s passing, Gene reconnected with Joyce and in 2002 proposed to and married her. Gene and Joyce were members of the Community Church of Vero Beach, where they both sang in the church choir and Gene served as an usher.
Gene is survived by his wife, Joyce Kurzweg; his daughter, Barbara Gugliotti; his sons, Steven and Scott Kurzweg; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 17, at 1 p.m. at the Community Church of Vero Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Community Church of Vero Beach.
