Kilted Mermaid burglary suspect arrested

VERO BEACH — A man suspected of stealing $243 worth of various meats from the Kilted Mermaid has been arrested, police said.

Jeffrey Charles Hefner, 56, of the 2200 block of 16th Avenue, Vero Beach, was charged with first-degree theft and burglary of a structure. He is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $40,000 bond.

Police went to scene at 12:21 p.m. Nov. 28 at the Kilted Mermaid, 1937 Old Dixie Highway, in response to a burglary of a storage shed. The beer and wine bar is located just south of 20th Street and 19th Place.

Security footage showed a man, later identified as Hefner, go to a fridge in the outside shed and steal various meats, including 10 pounds of lamb, 10 pounds of shrimp and 15 pounds of pork tender loin, police said.

The man was seen leaving the area on a bicycle. Detectives then issued an “attempt to identify” bulletin. Within a few days, the suspected was identified as Hefner, police said.

Police arrested Hefner Dec. 9 on outstanding warrants for the burglary and took him to the county jail for booking.

No further information was immediately available.
