IR Academy to host WaterVentures mobile lab

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — In an effort to educate students on the water cycle and empower them to become water stewards, the Indian River Academy will be hosting a mobile science lab.

The WaterVentures Learning Lab, which is housed inside a redesigned 53-foot semi-trailer, will be held at 9 a.m. Monday at the academy, 500 20th St. S.W. The lab features museum quality experiential learning activities and exhibits that offer a hands-on look at Florida’s diverse watersheds, water conservation, recycling efforts and the Florida ecosystem, officials said.

“This is a great opportunity for our students to learn about Florida’s watersheds and why conservation of this natural resource is so important,” said Dustin Strate, 5th grade teacher and organizer of the WaterVentures event for Indian River County. “Students will work with experienced educators who provide a hands-on experience to help students understand the issues with today’s watershed, in a mobile science lab, providing museum quality exhibits.”

WaterVentures operates six days a week visiting schools, fairs and community events throughout the year, officials said. It’s mainly funded by Zephyrhllis water and is made possible through sponsorships from Crystal Springs Foundation and Publix Super Markets charities.

WaterVentures is based on the experience and success of the Crystal Springs Foundation and Crystal Springs Preserve, a 530-acre sanctuary devoted to environmental education and the preservation of Florida’s natural environment, officials said.

“Teaching kids and Florida residents how essential water is as a natural resource is more vital now than ever,” said Karen Pate, Vice President of Crystal Springs Preserve. “We are thrilled to visit Indian River Academy and help foster the next generation of water stewards.”
