Man charged in “antique spear” stabbing

SEBASTIAN — A 59-year-old man was arrested after he stabbed another man with what police called an “antique spear.”

Mark David Stanley, of the 1000 block of Palmetto Avenue, Sebastian, was charged with aggravated battery. He is being held at the Indian River County Jail on $10,000 bond.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, police went to Stanley’s home in response to a physical disturbance. Police spoke with Stanley, who had no recollection of what had occurred.

Police then spoke with a witness who said he was helping his mother drop off groceries at the residence. The man’s mother is a tenant at the home and Stanley, who also lives there, is the homeowner, police spokesman Commander John Blackledge said.

A second man was with the son and his mother when they went to the home. Stanley told the man’s mother that he didn’t want the son inside the home.

To avoid confrontation, the son waited outside while his mother approached the door. When she tried to enter, Stanley slammed the door on her finger and was holding the door shut with his body weight, police said.

The mother then began to scream for him to open the door and let her fingers free. When Stanley refused, the woman’s son and a second man forced open the door.

The mother went into the home to get some personal belongings. Her son and the second man stood in front of the woman’s bedroom door while Stanley walked to another room.

Then, Stanley came around the corner and swung an antique metal spear at the son and his mother. The spear struck the son on the wrist and abdomen, leaving a cut, police said.

The son tried to disarm Stanley by grabbing the spear while the second man punched Stanley in the nose, knocking him down. When Stanley fell, everyone left the home.

Police said Stanley was heavily intoxicated before the incident. Police spoke with the mother and the second man, who’s statements corroborated the detail of events from the son.

Stanley was arrested and taken to the county jail for booking.
