Barbara B. Steward, 88, Vero Beach

Barbara B. Steward, 88, passed away on Oct. 1, 2017. She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., on Sept. 14, 1929, and lived in the Bronx, Brewster, Yonkers, N.Y., and Vero Beach. She was the younger daughter of Stephen and Anna Bellner.

After attending school she started working at The American Tobacco Company in NYC where she first met her beloved husband of 60 years, Edward. They had two children, Robert, who passed away at the age of 13, and Laura.

Barbara went back to work after Laura turned 16 and loved working at Ciba-Geigy as the administrator of the Quarter Century Club. She was the heart of the office, known to bring a smile wherever she wandered. She worked there until she retired and then moved full-time to Grand Harbor where she learned to play golf. She won often and loved playing with the Ladies 9-Holers and her weekly Tuesday group.

Every Friday she could be found at St. Vincent DePaul Thrift Shop volunteering with her friends Carolyn and Mary. She said she was volunteering but everyone who loved her knew she was really there to shop for a great deal. Shopping was in her blood and stories of her latest shopping bargains were legendary.

She loved dogs and they loved her. A dog never made it past Barbara without stopping for a scratch, give her a kiss or just a cuddle. Her house was known as the dog house and she loved to snuggle in her chair crocheting with a dog by her side.

Barbara and Laura were more like soulmates than mother and daughter and loved and cared for each other on many levels right until she passed. Laura knows she is still caring for her even after she rejoined her husband and son and granddogs, Frankie and Max and Patches in Heaven on Sunday.

She was surrounded by her beloved daughter Laura, her niece Theresa and many friends. She is survived by her “older” sister Theresa; her favorite brother-in-law Richard; her nieces and nephew, Nancy Ellen, Theresa and Ricky; numerous great nieces and nephews and her beloved OPD, other people’s dogs, Maxx, Luna and Ava.

She died in the space between two breaths with vodka on her lips, love and misbehaving in her thoughts and peace in her heart.

Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to: St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital – for pediatric cardiac surgery: www.stjude.org

A Celebration of her life will be held Friday, Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. at the Grand Harbor clubhouse.
