VERO BEACH — A proposal for a 110-room hotel fronted by a handful of restaurants and retail shops won easy approval Tuesday from the Indian River Board of Commissioners.
Konover Acquisitions sought to rezone 9.66 acres on State Road 60 for a planned development known as Vero Beach Square. The parcel is between Applebee’s and Sonny’s BBQ restaurants.
Commissioners were pleased at the notion of more hotel rooms.
“Hotels I’ve stayed in are pretty darn quiet,” said Commissioner Bob Solari. “The idea of having another hotel in Indian River County is a plus. A hotel would be a great addition to the community. Also, it’s close to Dodgertown.”
Dodgertown is the one-time spring training site of the Brooklyn – and later Los Angeles – Dodgers. The site has been maintained despite the team’s departure, and is used year-round for baseball tournaments and other events.
The facility has limited lodging, making a nearby hotel a plus.
