Storm is ‘extremely dangerous’ and ‘life-threatening

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Indian River County officials are continuing their warning to residents that Hurricane Matthew is “an extremely dangerous and life-threatening situation for Florida.”

The storm is currently a Category 3 hurricane but is expected to strengthen into a Category 4 hurricane before hitting Florida.

The following warnings and watch have been issued and are in effect:

  • Hurricane Warning
  • Storm Surge Warning
  • Flood Watch

Potential wind impacts are likely to be extensive to devastating. Indian River County winds are forecast to be 95-115 gusting to 140.

The onset of Tropical Storm force winds is expected by mid-late afternoon.

Conditions could improve by Saturday morning.

There is a threat of storm surge for those living on the intra-coastal waterway.

Rainfall of 6-8 inches and local totals can be 8-12 inches are forecast.
