Herber L. Leege, 86, of Vero Beach, passed away on Sept. 17, 2016, after a short illness.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents William and Margaret and by his loving wife of 41 years, Louise, in 1997. He is survived by several cousins.
Leege was born on Dec. 6, 1929, in Hamburg, Germany and immigrated to this country in 1933. He resided first in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then in the Bronx, N.Y. In 1956 he moved to Sloatsburg, N.Y., in Rockland County. He moved to Vero Beach in 1982 and resided here ever since.
He graduated from James Monroe High School in the Bronx and attended New York University School of Physical Education until 1951 when he entered the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving as a military police officer until 1953. In 1954 he enlisted in the New York State Police and served with them for the next 25 years, retiring in August 1979. He served in Troops “K” Hawthorne, Troop “T” Thruway, Kingston and Suffern Troop “B” Malone and Plattsburg.
He worked for Treasure Coast Travel and in 1984 became the owner/operator of a chauffeur service until 1997.
He attended Holy Cross Catholic Church and was an usher for many years. He was a member of the Association of Former New York State Troopers, Inc. Tri-State Chapter, Goshen, N.Y.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 3 p.m., Sept. 29, 2016, at St. Helens Catholic Church, Vero Beach. Interment will be at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, N.Y. at a later date.
