School district still short on teachers

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River County School District still needs about a dozen teachers before school starts.

The district has about 1,000 teachers on staff and lost about 10 percent, or 108 teachers, at the end of the school year. So far about 97 teachers have been replaced, according to school spokesman Flynn Fidgeon.

Of the 108 teachers lost, 46 retired, three were terminated, 46 quit and 13 did not renew their contracts.

New teachers, or those teaching for less than three years, comprised 13 of those who quit or didn’t renew their contracts.
