Former Vero mayor killed in rollover crash

VERO BEACH — Hearts are heavy in Vero Beach today as it was learned the city’s former mayor, Sabin Abell Jr., 83, was killed Wednesday night in a rollover crash.

The tragic accident also injured his wife, Karen Abell, 78, who was hospitalized, according to the Vero Beach Police Department. She sustained minor injuries. Both were transported to the Indian River Medical Center. 

Around 5:40 p.m. Sabin was pronounced dead by hospital staff, according to authorities. 

According to Vero Beach Police, the rollover crash happened near 20th Street and 10th Avenue when the driver’s Toyota 4Runner went through the intersection at the northeast corner around 4:45 p.m., hit a power structure and landed on its driver’s side in a parking lot.

At this time police believe a pre-existing medical condition may have contributed to the cause of the crash.
