VERO BEACH — After 16 years on the job, Animal Control Officer Bruce Dangerfield is finally ready to hang up the scanner and put away the cages.
The 73-year-old joined the Vero Beach Police Department in 2000, helping the agency handle the community’s animal population, investigating cases of animal cruelty and helping those in need.
June 3 is his last scheduled day on the job. After that, the Vero Beach native is expected to spend time with his family, which includes his wife, two grown children and six grandchildren.
Dangerfield was named Florida’s Animal Control Officer of the Year in 2009.
Over the years, Dangerfield has helped rescue countless cats and dogs and even snakes and horses while working with the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County.
