Kenneth A. Schubert, 89, of Vero Beach, passed away on March 4, 2016.
He is survived by his sister Mildred A. Lemke of Miami; four daughters: Lisa Schubert of New York, Carol Kuntz (Thomas) of Winter Park, Fla., Robin Sells (Alden) of New Paltz, N.Y., Wendy Hammarstrom (William) of Houston, Texas; and eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marcia Kuhlke Schubert.
Schubert grew up in the Bronx and on Long Island. He enlisted in the Navy when he was only 16 to fight in WWII. He attended Adelphi University, where he met his sweetheart, Marcia Kuhlke.
He joined Firestone Tire & Rubber Company after graduation, where he served as an executive in the international division (India, Puerto Rico, Panama, Venezuela, Mexico, Thailand and Australia) before moving to Miami and then Vero Beach.
Schubert died as peacefully as possible given his extraordinary resolve to “rage against the dying of the light.” He was a major life force, with a sharp, sometimes biting wit, an appreciation of the simple pleasures of life, a profound attachment to his daughters, and a curious mind. One of the last of the Greatest Generation, he will be deeply missed.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of one’s choice . A private service will be held in New York City early this summer.
