Jack Hanner Scott, 82, Vero Beach

Jack Hanner Scott, 82, of Vero Beach, a retired architect, died Feb. 29, 2016, at his home in Vero Beach after a long illness.

Born in Fort Pierce, Fla., on Feb. 26, 1934, to Karl Leo Scott of Kingsley, Iowa, and Ida Kathryn Hanner Scott of Madison, Georgia.

Jack graduated from St. Lucie County High School in 1952, he played clarinet for the University of Florida Band where he completed his degree in Architecture and was appointed to 2nd Lt. in Army Field Artillery.

He was a partner in Stebbins and Scott, Architect. He spent more than 60 years as a draftsman, project manager, project architect and architect allowed for a variety of projects such as schools and colleges, Federal, County and City buildings, high rise condominiums, churches, private office buildings and residences.

Jack donated his time by serving on the Boards of the Salvation Army, St. Lucie County and City of Fort Pierce Contractor Examining Board, St. Lucie County Planning and Zoning Board, Board of Directors for St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce, the St. Anastasia School Board, John Carroll School Board and Kiwanis Club. In 1980, he was elected Chamber of Commerce “Man of the Year.”

Jack served 25 years in the Army Reserve while completing the following courses: field artillery basic and advance, nuclear weapons employment, Armed Forces staff college orientation, Army command and general staff college and was a certified fallout shelter analyst. His most significant assignments were Army Garrision Personnel Officer (S1), and Commanding Officer, 7th Battalion 9th Field Artillery (8″SP). He retired from the Army with the rank of Colonel.

He was a member of Kiwanis, Sigma Phi Epsilon (College Social Fraternity), Scabbard and Blade (Honorary Military Fraternity), Kappa, Kappa PSI (Honorary Music Fraternity), University of Florida Alumni Association, Treasure Coast Gator Club, Treasure Coast Model Railroad Club and a Life Member of the Reserve Officers Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Peggy); his children: John Christopher Hanner (Maureen) Scott, of Mooresville, NC; Kathryn Jean (Phil) Buck, of Estero, FL; Sean Thomas Scott of Fort Pierce, FL; Anne Marie (Randy) Rogers, of Fort Pierce, FL; and stepchildren: James E. (Suzi) Copeland, III, of Vero Beach, FL; Susan Lawton (Allen) Hodges, of Fort Pierce, FL. He has five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and four step-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m., Friday, March 4th at Yates Funeral Home, Fort Pierce Chapel. Funeral service will be at St. Marks Anglican Church, 1795 45th street, Vero Beach, FL 32967, Saturday, March 5th at 2 p.m. Interment in church garden immediately following the service.
