VERO BEACH — The FBI has issued an alert for the shooting suspect who killed a person in Vero Beach on Jan. 21. The notice is for Unlawful Flight to Avoid Prosecution, according to an email from Vero Beach Police.
The shooting suspect from the Jan. 21 incident is believed to be in North Carolina traveling in a white four door Toyota.
Edward “Geovani” Guardado Gamez, 24, of Fellsmere, fled with his girlfriend and two children, according to Vero Beach Police Chief David Currey.
Maria Marisela Flores Lopez, 21, along with Edward Jr., 4, and Lizette, 1, were dropped off on the shoulder of Interstate 95 near Wade, North Carolina. They then walked to a closed gas station, where a passerby took them to a store.
It is not known if Gamez still is armed. Police have not recovered a weapon.
Gamez is still on the run, according to authorities. He and his family stayed locally until the next night after the shooting. They then took off in a stolen truck that a co-worker previously lent to Gamez.
Authorities do not know how he came into possession of the Toyota most recently. However, they received help along the way to North Carolina, said Chief Currey in a press conference Friday afternoon.
Lopez is cooperating with authorities, according to police. She might not have known about the shooting when she got in the truck, said Chief Currey.
“We’re not real sure she knew the alert was made,” said Chief Currey. The alert was only in the State of Florida.
The kids seem to be fine, according to police.
