INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Fifteen-year-old Nick Dean is no stranger to hitting home runs. In fact, in 2012 he broke the home run record for Vero Beach American Little League. But from Dec. 28 to Jan. 2, Dean will be hitting home runs not for bragging rights or to win games, but for charity.
Dean has been selected for the 2015 Power Showcase All-American Baseball Team and will be one of 170 of the world’s best players participating in the International High School Power Showcase representing 20-plus countries at Marlins Park in Miami.
“Home Runs That Help” is a community outreach initiative of the Power Showcase, which has raised thousands of dollars for various children’s causes over the last nine years.
Each player selects a charity and an individual that is impacted by that charity. Dean has partnered with 14-year-old Cody Jones, who has Cystic Fibrosis and Diabetes.
Jones will join Dean in Miami as he hits to raise money for Sunny Shores Sea Camp in Jones’ honor.
Sunny Shores Sea Camp is a week-long camp of education, support and bonding for Cystic Fibrosis families held annually in Vero Beach and is one of Jones’ favorite activities every year.
The community is encouraged to rally around both Dean and Jones as they head to Miami to participate in “Home Runs That Help.” Tax deductible donations can be made online at www.sunnyshoresseacamp.org/donate or by contacting Nick’s mother, Chris Dean, at (772) 473-3433.
