Vero Beach Table Tennis Club hosts Treasure Coast Championship tournament

VERO BEACH — For the second consecutive year, Larry Hensley has proven he is the best table tennis player on the Treasure Coast, defeating a string of nationally rated opponents in the 5th annual Championship tournament at the Vero Beach Table Tennis Club.

Coming in second place was Weiqi Luo. Also competing in the open division were Karl Freitag and Tyson McCoy.

It was an intense shootout in the B division, with Ven Subramanyan claiming the first place trophy. It was a three-way tie for second place between John Doelman, Mike Daugherty and Kim Chuong. Also competing were Brian Mills, James Fischer and Tom Swan.

Jon Gromyko won the C Division competition, overcoming Richard Lieberman, Joanne Hodge and Derrick Michalak.

“This was the best tournament we’ve had yet,” said Tournament Director Karl Freitag. “Every year the competition gets tougher and tougher. Our champion Larry Hensley has been playing table tennis locally for 40 years. He’s such a strong player, he’ll be competing next week in the U.S. National Championships in Las Vegas.”
