Emerson Center’s free Florida Humanities Series continues on Nov. 19

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Emerson Center’s free Florida Humanities Series, in partnership with the Florida Humanities Council, continues presentations on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.

Historian/songwriter Bill Jamerson will present “Dollar a Day Boys: A Musical Tribute to the Civilian Conservation Corps.” Jamerson will tell stories about Florida’s CCC boys, using photos, video and memorabilia. From 1933 to 1942, the CCC public relief program provided work and dollar-a-day income for unemployed, unmarried men from relief families. Jamerson will bring this often-overlooked period to life once again with heartfelt stories and hilarious tales from that era.

The Florida Humanities Series is presented by The Emerson Center at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Vero Beach. Seven acclaimed speakers and performers are being presented at the Center through April 2016, with all presentations relating to Florida history, people and culture. Admission to each is complimentary and all performances begin at 7 p.m.

Future speakers, their topics and performance dates include Dec. 10: Avenue D Choir in “A Joyful Holiday Concert” with holiday refreshments following; Jan. 21: Tom Berson “Transparent Waters: The History and Significance of Florida Springs;” Feb. 18: Craig Pittman and “How Florida Contracted Manatee Insanity;” March 10: Michael Francis, Ph.D. with “La Florida before Jamestown: Europeans, Africans, and Indians in La Florida, 1513-1607;” and on April 14: Jack Davis, Ph.D. with “Paradise Lost: Reflections on Florida’s Environmental History.”

Funding for these programs is provided through a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and sponsored in part by Marine Bank & Trust
