Vero Council chooses new leaders

VERO BEACH — Mayor Jay Kramer and Vice Mayor Randy Old have been elected Monday morning by the City Council to lead meetings for the next 12 months.

The Vero Beach Canvassing Board certified the results from Nov. 3 when Councilman Dick Winger garnered 1,178 votes and Councilman Harry Howle received 1,074 votes, to win the two spots up for grabs this year.

Winger nominated Kramer, while Councilwoman Pilar Turner and Howle nominated Old for Mayor. Old declined, saying the office of mayor takes a great deal of time and he felt someone with more experience should have the job.

Kramer was then elected by default. Kramer then nominated Old for vice mayor and there were no other nominations.

The first regular meeting of the Vero Beach City Council is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
