Recycling, trash carts still out for delivery

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Nearly 11,000 recycling and trash carts were delivered over the weekend, but more are still waiting to be placed in driveways, according to Utilities Director Vincent Burke.

“There have been some headaches along the way,” Burke told the Board of County Commissioners Tuesday morning.

Approximately 81 percent of the carts have been delivered county-wide, leaving 19 percent left to be delivered.

“Trash will be picked up,” Burke said. “Recycling will be picked up.”

Even if customers do not have the new bins, haulers will collect refuse and recyclables.

Burke said Waste Management brought in 14 extra crews over the weekend in order to deliver more carts, but rainy conditions hindered the process. And a new hauler in the south part of the county added to some of the confusion.

Despite the challenges in getting the new recycling carts delivered for all but Indian River Shores – which has opted to keep its current recycling system – the Solid Waste Department has noted an uptick in recycling over the last four days.

Recycling had averaged between 15 and 20 tons, Burke said. Since the start of the month, when single-stream recycling went into effect, the tonnage increased to about 25.
