INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Come celebrate Earth Day, April 22, at the Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County’s (HSVBIRC) two thrift shops. Each location will have hundreds of re-purposed items available for sale and all items will be on display until sold.
Each year, Humane Society volunteers and staff celebrate Earth Day by getting creative. For the last few weeks they have been busy turning donated shirts and linens into decorative rugs, LP records into candy dishes, yarn into dream catchers, t-shirts into necklaces and earrings into magnets.
“The greenest products are the ones that already exist,” said Humane Society Thrift Shop manager Annette Barcus. “Giving old items new meaning is one of the best methods for reducing waste and conserving our natural resources.”
Barcus said Earth Day is also the perfect time to recycle older items via donation. Donated merchandise such as china, glassware, furniture and clothing can be sold to help raise funds for Humane Society services while donations of gently used blankets, sheets and towels can go directly to the shelter to help with animal care.
“The Humane Society’s Thrift Shops benefit both animals and the environment,” Barcus said.
The Humane Society’s Vero Beach Thrift Shop is located at 4435 20th St. while the Sebastian Thrift Shop can be found at 441 Sebastian Blvd. (CR 512). Both thrift shops regularly seek volunteers.
