McKee Botanical Garden spring, summer classes announced

VERO BEACH — McKee Botanical Garden’s Spring and Summer 2015 class series will continue on March 25 with “Growing Daylilies” from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Award-winning gardener and Bougainvillea Garden Circle of Vero Beach member Jack Phillips will discuss the many species of daylilies, classifications, blooming cycles and how to grow and care for this hardy plant here in Florida. Cost is $15 for McKee members and $20 for non-members.

“Make a Succulent Wreath” will follow on Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. In this hands-on workshop, instructor Elaine Erlanger of Hidden Garden, LLC will teach participants how to create a wreath using live succulent plantings that they will take home afterwards. Cost is $60 for McKee members and $65 non-members and includes all supplies and plant materials.

Additional class topics and dates include:

Creating a Food Forest on April 17 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. (cost: $15/$20).

Photographing Waterlilies on May 16 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. (cost: $30/$35).

McKee will also offer three cooking classes, beginning with “Flavors of Spring” on Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Chef Chris Bireley of Osceola Bistro will demonstrate how to prepare crab encrusted flounder with béarnaise, oven roasted potatoes, Nicoise vegetables and sweet greens salad.

Chef Bireley will also lead “Summer Brunch” on Sunday, June 28, where he will show participants how to give a modern twist to classic brunch dishes. Both demonstrations will include a tasting. Cost is $40 for McKee members and $45 for non-members per class.

Finally, McKee will welcome back Chef Urvi Upadhyay who will teach “Intro to Indian Vegetarian Cooking.” Attendees will get to learn about Indian spices, culture and cuisine and sample various dishes. Past participants are welcome as different recipes will be featured, and spice boxes will be available for purchase. Cost is $55 McKee members and $60 for non-members.

McKee Botanical Garden is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture and enhance a historic garden in a unique tropical setting for the education, enjoyment and enrichment of all. McKee Botanical Garden is located at 350 US Highway 1 in Vero Beach. General admission rates are $12 adults, $11 seniors and $8 children ages 3 to 12. Admission is free for members and children under 3. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 to 5 p.m. The Garden is closed Mondays.
