South County man accused of assaulting 2 officers

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A South Vero man is in jail after an altercation with law enforcement during which he punched an officer and grabbed the officer’s radio equipment.

The man, identified as Brendon Collom, 44, of the 800 block of 5th Court, is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond on charges that include felony battery on a law enforcement officer, felony resist arrest with violence, and felony deprive officer of means of communication, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities were called out to the area by Collom’s mother, who reported her son was becoming aggressive toward her, the arrest report stated.

The physical altercation between officers and Collom began when Collom ignored one of the officer’s questions about events that had transpired that night, Sunday, according to the report. Collom then proceeded to reach behind his back as if to grab something out of the officer’s view.

When the officer approached Collom, demanding he show his hands, Collom resisted and punched the officer in the chest and on the left side of the face. The defendant also pulled the officer’s handheld microphone off of his uniform, and kicked second officer, the report states.

Officers made several failed attempts at gaining control over Collom using a Taser, but the defendant was wearing a jacket that protected him from the shock.

According to the report, Collom was “removing the probes from himself.”

Authorities did gain control of Collom and transported him to the Indian River Medical Center for treatment before he was booked into the Indian River County Jail.

According to the report, Collom has a “history of aggression towards law enforcement.”
