Genealogical Society celebrates Black History Month

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) is pleased to honor Black History Month by presenting and placing new cemetery markers to the Gifford Cemetery Association. There will be a presentation ceremony on Feb. 16, 2015, at 10 a.m.

The IRGS Cemetery Project Committee discovered the need for a grave location system at the Gifford Cemetery while they were documenting the graves of Indian River County. Project leader Jack Berrigan said, “We found that while these people work so hard to maintain their cemetery with so little funding, there was no system in place to locate the individual graves.”

These markers will enable visitors to easily locate the correct location of their loved ones and ancestors.

Working together with the management of the Gifford Cemetery, a joint team was created with IRGS to locate the cemetery records, identify the grave markers and photograph them. The new system will identify the graves by rows and site numbers. The Society sees this as a way to lend a hand in the community and meet its objective of “paying it forward.”
