SFC Daniel Ferguson Memorial 5K organized by daughter

Approximately 130 runners, including many active and retired military, took part last Saturday in the SFC Daniel Ferguson Memorial 5K Run along Sebastian’s Riverside Drive.

Ashley Ferguson, 18, a senior at Sebastian River High School, organized the race in memory of her beloved father. He was one of three soldiers killed in the 2014 Ft. Hood, Texas, shooting, and a recipient of the Soldier’s Medal, the highest honor a soldier can receive for an act of valor in a non-combat situation.

Before the run, the SRHS NROTC Honor Guard posted the colors, the SRHS Encores led the Star Spangled Banner, and bugler Duke Scales played reveille.

A squad of soldiers from the Pt. St. Lucie Army Recruiting Station led the runners at double-time, shouting cadence all the way.

Wearing her dad’s field jacket, Ashley presented a special dog-tag to runners crossing the finish line.

The event raised $5,000 to support the non-profit K9’s for Warriors.
