UPDATE: Crash on I-95 kills boy, 13, near Fellsmere

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A vehicle carrying two adults and four children crashed on Interstate 95 near the Fellsmere/Sebastian exit Thursday morning, leading to the death of a 13-year-old boy.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Jamila Mandisa Mytis Stewart, 25, of Lauderhill, Fla., was driving a 2005 Isuzu Ascender north on the highway when, for an as-of-yet undetermined reason, Stewart lost control of the vehicle and it overturned.

The crash ejected the 13-year-old boy, who was not wearing a seatbelt, according to authorities.

The child was taken to Sebastian River Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The others in the vehicle, including Stewart, a 47-year-old, two 11-year-olds and a 14-year-old, were treated for minor injuries.

The two 11-year-olds were not wearing their seatbelts, FHP said in its report. Both adults and the 14-year-old wore their seatbelts.

Charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Northbound I-95 was shut down as authorities investigated. All lanes were reported open as of 1:45 p.m.


FELLSMERE —Florida Highway Patrol is reporting that all lanes are now open after a fatal crash shut down northbound traffic.


FELLSMERE — Traffic is being detoured off of Interstate 95 northbound, west on County Road 512 to Broadway, South Carolina Street, then Babcock Street, according to Fellsmere Police.


FELLSMERE — Florida Highway Patrol has shut down Interstate 95 at the 158 mile marker, according to Fellsmere Police.

According to authorities there has been one fatality. Two adults and four children were involved in a one vehicle accident that happened around 11 a.m.

One patient was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center, according to Indian River Fire Rescue. All others were transported to local hospitals.
