Bob Burr joins Indian River Community Foundation Board

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Board of Directors of the Indian River Community Foundation recently elected Vero Beach resident Robert B. Burr, Jr. to a three-year term.

Burr joins 17 other volunteer board members elected annually to provide leadership and governance in fulfilling the organization’s mission to build a stronger community through donor-driven philanthropy.

Before retiring in 2012, Burr was professionally associated for 39 years with Richard K. Mellon and Sons in Ligonier, Pa., serving most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer.

Through this affiliation he also served as a Trustee and Chief Investment Officer for both the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the R.K. Mellon Family Foundation. He is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University and holds a Masters of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Burr said his experience working with a large family foundation gave him the opportunity to witness firsthand the impact private philanthropy can make in a community. He said his expertise lends itself to helping the Indian River Community Foundation Board continue on a path toward becoming a leading force in donor-based giving.

“Our fund holders expect and deserve a high level of financial stewardship, including strict attention to efficient and cost-effective investment management and grant making practices,” Burr said. “I am happy to use my professional background to elevate the effectiveness of philanthropic giving in our community.”

The Indian River Community Foundation began operating in 2008 and has since grown to hold over $20 million in assets held in 102 unique charitable funds. The foundation works with individual philanthropists, local advisors and community organizations to develop results-oriented strategies to achieve charitable goals.
