Pelican Island Audubon hosting meetings, field trips

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The Pelican Island Audubon Society has announced its calendar of upcoming meetings and field trips. The public is invited attend and is encouraged to participate.

Meetings

March 10 (Sebastian) – Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary with Brewster Mosely; 6 p.m. at the North County Library, 1001 Sebastian Blvd.

March 17 (Vero Beach) – The decline in Snail Kites, sparse snails, and a hot pink distraction with Dr. Philip Darby, University of West Florida; 7:30 p.m. at the Vero Beach Community Center, 2266 14th Ave.

March 15 – Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area at 9 a.m. – Volunteer interpretive guide Ken Gonyo and his cohorts will lead a 1 1/2 mile walk through shady, lush hammock, sandy pine flat woods and coastal wetlands to a 15-foot Observation Tower. Meet up with Ken at 9 a.m. in the Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area Parking. Be prepared to walk on rustic and uneven trails. Wear sturdy shoes and long pants. Bring water and sun/mosquito protection. Please note: No bathroom facilities are available.

March 20 – Combined Trip: Wakodahatchee Wetlands, 13026 Jog Road, Delray Beach, and Green Cay Nature Center, 12800 Hagen Ranch Road, Boynton Beach – Guide: Bill Loftus – boardwalk over wetlands/expect to see numerous species of waterbirds and other wildlife – Meet at 6 a.m. at the TA Truck Stop, corner of State Road 60 and 90th Avenue, for carpool. Return to Vero at approximately 5 p.m.

March 23 – Orlando Wetlands Park, 25155 Wheeler Road, Christmas, Fla. – Guides: Steve Goff and Susan Boyd – Participants have a choice of either biking the wetlands or walking (Those biking will need to supply their own bike) – Carpool from the Sebastian McDonald’s at the County Road 512 I-95 exit – Carpool departs at 6:30 a.m.

March 29 – Saturday – Circle B Bar Reserve, 4399 Winter Lake Road (SR 540), Lakeland. Restored floodplain and marsh makes for impressive wildlife viewing. Meet at TA Truck Stop, corner of State Road 60 and 90th Avenue, for carpool. Optional camping opportunity.

The Pelican Island Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society dedicated to the preservation and protection of animals, plants, and natural communities in Indian River County through advocacy, education, and public awareness through monthly meetings, field trips, and other programs.
