INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A North Carolina man has been arrested for intentionally dislocating his shoulder to obtain the controlled substance Percocet, a narcotic drug, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
On Thursday, around noon, the Indian River County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Indian River Medical Center after a disturbance was reported, according to authorities.
Dustin Collins, 33, of North Carolina, was reportedly attempting to take medications and syringes from the hospital, according to the Sheriff’s Office. When authorities arrived they had Collins empty his pockets where they found a syringe, Depicote, and alcohol pads, as well as miscellaneous paperwork.
There was also a prescription written out to Cory L. Mills to receive 20 5-325mg Percocet tablets, according to authorities. Collins said he was not Mills and that the prescription was “just some stupid s**t I did.”
As authorities questioned Collins about the prescription written out to Mills, Collins said he checked himself into Sebastian River Medical Center on Dec. 18 after he intentionally dislocated his shoulder in an effort to obtain narcotics to support his drug addiction, said the Sheriff’s Office.
He went on to say he has done this in the past and always provides a false ID to obtain controlled substances. Collins said that his sole intention was not to seek medical treatment for the dislocated shoulder, but to get Percocet.
Collins also had an active warrant from North Carolina for a violation of parole, with the original offense of obtaining property by fraud.
Collins faces charges that include fugitive from justice, giving a false name while detained, and obtaining or attempting to obtain a controlled substance by fraud.
