INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — The first day of the official qualifying period for municipal elections in Indian River County has brought out several candidates for Vero Beach and Sebastian city councils.
Currently, there are four candidates who have filed for two seats on the Vero Beach dais and three for the Sebastian council’s three seats.
Those seeking to serve on the Vero Beach City Council include incumbent City Councilman Dick Winger and perennial candidate and former councilman Brian Heady. The other two candidates are frequent Vero Beach City Council commenter Joseph Guffanti and resident Amelia Graves, the daughter of A. Julia Graves – the Vero Beach attorney representing Sebastian teen Kaitlyn Hunt who faces charges of having sex with her underage girlfriend.
In Sebastian, two of the three incumbents whose seats are up for election this November have qualified to run again. Vice Mayor Don Wright and Councilwoman Andrea Coy have filed to run for re-election.
Frequent Sebastian City Council commenter and Sebastian business owner Damien Gilliams pre-qualified for the municipal race earlier this year, but as of the end of the day Thursday, had not finalized his paperwork.
No one has filed yet for the Fellsmere City Council, which has two seats up for election – currently held by Mayor Susan Adams and Councilwoman Sara Savage.
If they file for the race and go unopposed, they will automatically retain their seats at the Fellsmere dais.
The qualifying period run until Sept. 6 for each municipality. For more information about how to qualify to run, contact the respective municipality’s city clerk.
