UPDATE: Inmate dies at hospital after fight with fellow inmate

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — An inmate of the Indian River County Jail has died after having been airlifted to a hospital after sustaining a head injury during a fight with a fellow inmate, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.

Vincent Laurie, 42, was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center on Tuesday following an altercation with fellow inmate Thomas Solomon, 27.

The hospital notified the Sheriff’s Office Wednesday that Laurie died from unknown causes. An autopsy will be performed.

The Sheriff’s Office said the two inmates got into a physical altercation Tuesday at about 11:20 a.m. During that altercation, Solomon struck Laurie in the head. Laurie fell to the floor and did not get up. No weapons were involved.

Laurie was in jail serving a one year sentence on felony charges of burglary of an occupied structure, grand theft, and violation of probation, according to the Sheriff’s Office web site.

Solomon was in jail also serving a one year sentence on a felony charge of sale or possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, according to the Sheriff’s Office web site.
