CAMERA: Coming home to a structure fire

I rounded the corner to my apartment complex my heart dropped. Smoke was billowing up from an area of where my wife and 6 month old daughter and I live.

As I write this I still feel bad for the neighbor of ours that lost their home, not to mention all of their baby items for her unborn child.

I’ve always been in the “right place in the right time” when it comes to breaking news. But this one scared me to death.

At first I jumped out of my car and ran toward the back of the building, still not knowing if it was ours or a neighboring one, smoke can be really deceptive.

Thankfully, and I say that with a heavy heart, it wasn’t ours.

Emergency personnel were already in route, so I did what I could do, I grabbed my camera gear. From where I stood, inside my patio, I could feel the heat.

Finally after getting the initial fire attack photos I ventured out. It was almost like being in a movie. It seemed surreal that it was happening so close to home.

As I edited photos I could still smell the smoke, and hear the firefighters on their radios.

A week later I can still smell it as they clean the property.
