VERO BEACH — Gustav Mahler is classified as a late romantic composer; his 5th Symphony takes the romance further.
The famed 4th movement Adagietto is said to truly be a “love letter” from the Austrian composer to his soon-to-be wife, Alma. Completed during one of the happiest periods of Mahler’s life, the symphony has been called a tour de force for orchestra, showcasing human emotion from jubilation to melancholy.
“Mahler’s 5th” will be presented Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2365 Pine Ave. in Vero Beach. The Sunday afternoon performance will also include the Florida premiere of Kenneth Fuchs’ “Canticle to the Sun,” a concerto for French horn and orchestra, featuring SCSO standout Juan Berrios.
$20 advance tickets are available through the orchestra website at www.SpaceCoastSymphony.org or at several convenient ticket outlets, including Marine Bank & Trust (beachside and mainland branches) and Madison Avenue Consignments.
Tickets at the door are $25. Students 18 years of age and under are admitted free.
For artistic director Aaron T. Collins, the hour-long 5th symphony by Mahler is a must-hear treat.
“The emotional scope of this work is massive,” said Collins. “It’s been called transformative, breathtaking and time-stopping. I call it an essential musical experience.”
