OK, I know. It’s a chicken. Not exotic. Not even a Habitat chicken. But you don’t see that many barnyard fowl pecking away at the corner of 12th Street and 20th Avenue. Or at least I don’t. So I thought I’d share.
Richard Schlitt works with a youth group, Youth on A Mission, made up of teams from St. Helen’s and Holy Cross, who do projects for people in need. A recent such project was helping a Habitat homeowner, Nickey Mills, give her house a brand new look.
One of the cool things about Habitat is the way it often generates interest among various groups to reach out to others. We partner, formally and informally, with all sorts of people and groups, large and small, and our homeowners are often the recipients of independent kind acts from within the community – such as Youth on a Mission.
One of our dedicated Women Build volunteers, Leslie Balcerak, can not only wield a hammer, she’s pretty good with a pen as well and has just written (and self-published) a book called “The 45 mph Couch Potato.” Don’t you love it? It’s about the adventures of her retired racing greyhound Aggie, and it’s written in first person (first dog?). Leslie is funny and clever and, apparently, Aggie has learned a lot from her. Its available on Amazon and will be in the Vero Beach Book Center, as well.
Hydrate! and have a good one.
