HAM radio operators, others invited to take severe weather spotting training

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — HAM radio operators, police and fire/rescue personnel, dispatchers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens are encouraged to participate in the annual SKYWARN training session scheduled for Thursday, April 12, at the Indian River County Emergency Operations Center in Gifford.

Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a severe weather spotter.

The free course is put on by the National Weather Service in Melbourne, the Treasure Coast Weather Network, Indian River County ARES and the Vero Beach Amateur Radio club.

By becoming SKYWARN trained, participants could help keep Indian River County safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.

Basic training will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and advanced training will follow from 8:45 to 10 p.m.
