VERO BEACH — Dollars for Scholars of Indian River County will host its third annual “Tie”Bration Celebration 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday Feb. 23 at Northern Trust Bank in Vero Beach.
This annual event began in February 2010, in honor of the late Darby Gibbons, who passed away in 2009. Gibbons, who was the Academic Dean and College Counselor at St. Edward’s School, also served on the Board of Directors for Dollar for Scholars for over 10 years. It was his wish to leave a legacy of a scholarship that would help a local student go to college.
A community event, “Tie”Bration celebrates all those who, like Darby, embrace these “things that tie us together,” striving to help our young people believe in themselves and the opportunity to find a better future through education.
Gibbons was also well known for his unique collection of ties – many of which were given to him as gifts from his students over the years; therefore, it was only fitting that a fundraiser be started to highlight Gibbons’ ties as well as raise funds for Dollars for Scholars.
Guests are being asked to don their favorite and most ‘fun’ ties as inspired by Darby Gibbons and in support of Dollars for Scholars, an organization that has awarded $7.6 million dollars in need-based scholarships to 2,541 Indian River County students since 1965.
Local students are actively involved in this special evening by sharing their talents in art, music and photography. This year the testimonial speaker will be Elizabeth Sockol, 2011 recipient of the Darby Gibbons scholarship.
Cost for this year’s “Tie”Bration is $100 per person, and there is a faculty/student rate of $50. Tickets can be purchased at the Dollars for Scholars office located at 333 17th Street, Suite T in Vero Beach.
Proceeds from the evening will provide much-needed scholarships for Indian River County students.
