Museum’s next Distinguished Professor presentation features Sweet Briar College Professor

VERO BEACH — As part of its 2012 Distinguished Professor Series, the Vero Beach Museum of Art presents Christopher L.C.E. Witcombe, Ph.D., Professor of Art History, Sweet Briar College. Professor Witcombe’s lecture, titled Looking at Pictures: Art History and the Visual Experience, takes place on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 2 pm.

Professor Witcombe states, “The perception of visual images is currently the focus of investigation in several otherwise unrelated disciplines and fields. This presentation takes recent research in the vision sciences (neuroscience, psychophysics, computer imaging, ophthalmology) and proposes ways by which our visual experience of works of art can be enhanced. A better awareness of the neurological mechanisms in the perception of the visual elements and their compositional relationships can contribute to a better understanding of why we respond to paintings in the ways we do. Using examples of paintings drawn from the history of art, this presentation will explain how we see, why we look, and why we enjoy it.”

Alumni of the featured schools enjoy the Museum member price for this series. The cost for individual lecture tickets is $20 for the general public and $15 for Museum members and alumni. Lectures take place in the Museum’s Leonhardt Auditorium. Attendees may register and pay by phone by calling (772) 231-0707, ext. 136; in person by visiting the Vero Beach Museum of Art; or online at www.verobeachmuseum.org using MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover credit cards.

Beginning its third decade in 2012, the Vero Beach Museum of Art’s Distinguished Professor Lecture Series, sponsored by The Frederick H. Leonhardt Foundation, provides some of the most distinguished colleges and universities in the U.S. with the opportunity to connect with their local Florida alumni by sharing recent scholarship in the arts and humanities with Museum members, the community, and Skidmore alumni.
