McKee to celebrate Halloween with Scarecrows in the Garden

VERO BEACH – For the second consecutive year, Scarecrows in the Garden will take over McKee Botanical Garden during its annual Trick-or-Treat at McKee BOOtanical Garden on Monday, Oct. 31 from 6 – 8 p.m.

New this year, the imaginative creations will be on display for an additional two weeks prior to Halloween, when visitors also will have the opportunity to tour the Garden’s “spooky” plants and enter to win a new Extended Family Membership, valued at $125.

“Visitors had so much fun discovering our scarecrows last Halloween, but they weren’t able to bring back friends and grandchildren before the display was taken down,” explained Executive Director Christine Hobart. “Expanding ‘Scarecrows in the Garden’ to two weeks will allow more families to view these creations and has encouraged more organizations to get involved in building their own.”

“Scarecrows” will open Saturday Oct. 15 and run through Sunday, Oct. 30 during normal Garden hours. Visitors can stroll through a Garden filled with dozens of scarecrows built by local businesses, schools and families; take a self-guided tour of “spooky” plants, such as the Strangler Fig; and submit the current location of a moving “Golden Rake” once per day to be entered to win a new Extended Family Membership, which covers three generations and is valued at $125 annually.

On Oct. 31, the Garden will open from 6 – 8 p.m. to offer trick-or-treating down flickering jungle pathways, games and activities in the historic Hall of Giants and a chance to view “Scarecrows in the Garden” by night. Visitors are encouraged to come in costume.

“Scarecrows in the Garden” and “Trick-or-Treat at McKee BOOtanical Garden” are sponsored by the “AT&T Real Yellow Pages.” The mission of McKee Botanical Garden is to nurture and enhance a historic garden in a unique tropical setting for the education, enjoyment and enrichment of all. McKee Botanical Garden is located at 350 US Highway 1 in Vero Beach.

General admission fees are $9 adults, $8 seniors and $5 children ages 3 to 12. Admission is free for members and children under 3. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
