Sebastian incumbents to face challengers in November election

SEBASTIAN — Two Sebastian City Council incumbents will take on four challengers in November’s municipal election. The qualifying period ends at 4:30 p.m. today.

Council members Andrea Coy and Don Wright have filed for re-election and will face four challengers, including three who have previously run for the council and a political newcomer.

Councilman Eugene Wolff, who is also up for re-election originally qualified for the race but late Friday decided to withdraw.

“Due to an unexpected increase in demands upon my time outside of council, I do not foresee (after November) being able to devote the necessary time required to be an effective council member,” Wolff said in a prepared statement. “I wish to thank the Sebastian voters for the wonderful support they have given me over the years and I hope I can be of service to the community sometime in the future.”

Coy, Wolff and Wright were elected to the Sebastian City Council in 2009, beating out five others.

Those challenging Coy and Wright are past candidates David DeVirgilio, Damien Gilliams and Bob McPartlan.

Eight-year Sebastian resident Amber Miller, was the first to pre-qualify for the race, announcing in March her bid for council.

Along with selecting three members to represent them at the dais, Sebastian voters will be asked to weigh in on proposed changes to the city’s charter – the city’s governing documents.

Among the questions on the charter amendments is one about extending the term length for Sebastian’s council members from 2-year terms to 4-year terms and imposing term limits of no more than eight consecutive years.
