CAMERA: Covering this year’s lobster mini-season was a walk on the beach

This is the first lobster mini-season I’ve ever covered in my career that started off surrounded by the corn and soybean fields of Indiana.

I got a brief tutorial last year from a local sports shop about how people use “ticklers” to coax the lobster from their homes below the ocean.

My mini adventure started at South Beach Park where only fishermen were found. So, I decided to just start walking north.

It was a nice overcast day which I appreciated since I was shooting in the morning facing east.

Along the way I met walkers and waved to joggers as I trudged alone with my two cameras and hip pack carrying my usual equipment plus water.

I got to the reef where one fisherman told me the lobster hunters were waiting for low tide. After that I encountered two ladies with British accents that told me that they had seen divers going in up by the two tall buildings, by Sexton Plaza).

At this point I start to think that I’ve gone a little crazy walking from South Beach to Sexton Plaza, but I didn’t have any photos from the event so I kept on going.

Finally, I reach Sexton Plaza where I ran to catch up with Nick Presner and his fellow divers. Luckily, they had at least four good sized lobster. Not so lucky for Ben Watkins, his still had some fight in him and decided to try waging revenge.

After it was all said and done, sore from walking 4 miles, and a few blisters later from not knowing when to ditch the sandals I think I still would have preferred this than being sick on a boat.
