Presbyterian Women Knit for Love

VERO BEACH — Presbyterian Women of all ages, from teenagers in Vero Beach to Lucy Vander Mel’s 101 year-old mother in Maine, recently participated in “Knitting for Love,” making crosses for members of the military services to wear inside their helmets.

The members of the Stitch and Gab group of Indian River Estates knitted more than half of the 1,125 crosses that have since been sent to troops and civilians in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other countries. Stitch and Gab members include Jan Burnham, Barbara Bush, Nancy Cavan, Betty Donmoyer, Janet Hempton, Jean Kuntz, Aurie Morrison, Pat Pelot, Joan Perkins, Betty Solomonson, Lois Stuart, and Jane Thompson.

Knitting for Love, a project of Presbyterian Women of the First Presbyterian Church of Vero Beach, is part of a special project sponsored by the sixteen Presbyteries in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina that make up Synod of South Atlantic.

Presbyterian Women (PW) is an active, independent, self-sufficient organization of women within First Presbyterian Church. They hold special events, meet regularly in Circles, participate in fundraising and other projects, and support Mission projects, such as Knitting for Love, locally and around the world. The organization raised $11,500 to support twenty-one organizations in 2010.
