SEBASTIAN – The Florida Department of Transportation appears ready to sign off on a long-in-coming project on US 1 through Sebastian. All it needs is the Sebastian City Council to formalize its own support.
That support is expected to be affirmed during Wednesday evening’s Sebastian City Council meeting.
The Sebastian City Council, seven months ago, approved plans to beautify and otherwise enhance the driving experience on US 1 through town. Those plans call for stamped asphalt at the crosswalks, better delineation of the on-street parking, and more landscaping.
In all, the city is expecting to put in about $250,000 worth of improvements.
Council members have said in prior discussions about the project that enhancing the on-street parking would be a win-win for the city, its businesses, and customers.
There are 125 parking spots that line US 1, most of which is underused except for when the city holds large events, such as the recent July Fourth Freedom Festival or the upcoming Clambake Festival.
Once the Sebastian City Council approves the resolution of the project’s support, the Florida Department of Transportation is expected to issue a permit for the work.
When the city has the permit in hand, the project will be sent out to bid by contractors. City staff will then select the contractor from the list of bidders and present that contractor to the Sebastian City Council for approval before work can begin.
