Man killed during early morning confrontation in Wabasso

WABASSO – A man in his early 20s was shot and killed overnight Sunday in the Summerplace neighborhood of Wabasso.

Indian River County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Deputy Jeff Luther said that about 2:45 a.m. Sunday man in his early 20s approached a house on the 9400 block of Periwinkle Drive, in the Summerplace subdivision of Wabasso Beach.

“The resident got into a confrontation with the white male,” Luther said. “A gun was involved. That is all we know at this time, as the case is still under investigation.”

Summerplace resident David Cox told VeroNews.com he approached two different deputies at 4:45 a.m. and around 8 a.m. to find out what happened, but that officers were fairly “tight lipped” about the details. Cox said the man who was fatally shot was reportedly banging on a door when the resident confronted him.

“I don’t know whether he was banging, beating, kicking, or what-not on a door,” Cox said. “He is definitely dead. I saw them carrying the body bag away.”

“My husband saw the deputies out there when he was going for his early morning bike ride, and from what police said it was essentially a home invasion,” Cox’s wife, Lorraine Heisler, said. “The man of the house basically heard something, went to check, got a gun, and the perp came at him.”

“This neighborhood is a place where people still don’t lock their doors,” Heisler said. “It is really a shock. It is certainly the safest neighborhood I’ve ever lived in. The homeowners … are people who have been in the neighborhood a really long time – real stalwarts of the neighborhood.”

Authorities have not released the names of either the shooter or the deceased.
