School Board could end LaCava’s contract early over personnel issues

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY – The Indian River County School Board will meet next week to discuss ending Schools Superintendent Dr. Harry LaCava’s contract early and install Dr. Fran Adams as new schools chief.

The issue was brought up at the end of Tuesday’s School Board meeting by member Carol Johnson, who raised concerns about asking LaCava to support personnel changes the incoming superintendent is wishing to make.

Throughout the process, LaCava has expressed misgivings in supporting or putting forth organizational and personnel changes recommended by Adams, which he does not, personally, endorse.

“Right now, I don’t feel comfortable,” LaCava told the School Board of the position he is in regarding the personnel changes.

Johnson said it would not be fair to ask LaCava to compromise his convictions. She added that if LaCava could have supported Adams’s recommendations, they would not need this special meeting to discuss terminating LaCava’s contract early.

Johnson said the meeting would have two items on the agenda – a call to remove LaCava and a call to install Adams.

The meeting is currently scheduled for June 21 at 3 p.m. in the School Board’s chambers.

The School Board has up to July 1 to approve the superintendent’s personnel recommendations, which means unless it holds another special meeting, the School Board would be expected to approve the changes at the June 28 regular business meeting to meet the deadline.
