VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Book Center has announced a number of author and book events.  In addition, children will enjoy Friday Morning Story Hour with Miss Julie at 10 a.m. in the Children’s Store.

Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m.:  Karen White presents The Beach Trees

Thursday, June 2 at 7 p.m.: Dianne Marcum presents Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach & Florida’s Space Coast

Wednesday, June 15 at 6 p.m.:  Kelle Groom presents I Wore the Ocean in the Shape of a Girl ~ A Memoir

Saturday, June 18 at 11 a.m.: “Donuts with Dad” Father’s Day Celebration with Miss Julie and special guest author and illustrator Ethan Long presenting My Dad, My Hero in the Children’s Store.  Stories and Refreshments too!

Monday, June 20 at 7 p.m.: David Baldacci presents One Summer

Friday, June 24 at 1p.m.: Senator Bob Graham presents Keys to the Kingdom

Saturday, June 25 at 11 a.m.: The Great Bubble Wrap Explosion in the Children’s Store.  Celebrate the Fourth of July, Independence Day ~ Children’s Store style!

Monday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m.: Vero Beach Bookies discuss Runaway  by Alice Munro

Low beach attendance for January; no water rescues

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." Slight dip for July beach attendance compared to last year

VERO BEACH — Beachgoers are hitting the shores this summer all while practicing social distancing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The city's three guarded beaches had a slight dip in attendance numbers in July compared to last year, according to a Vero Beach Lifeguard Association report. Last month, 86,095 people flocked to Jaycee Park Beach, Humiston Park Beach and South Beach Park, lifeguards said. This number is less than the 86,686 beachgoers who hit the sand in July 2019. In July of 2018, the city set an attendance record when the beaches had 93,000 visitors, lifeguards said. Fertilizer restrictions to go into effect next month

A reminder from the Indian River Neighborhood Association to residents of Indian River County, City of Vero Beach, Sebastian and Orchid. We are coming into our rainy season when more nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorous are likely to be washed from our lawns, driveways and roads into the storm water system and, ultimately, into our local waterways such as the Indian River Lagoon. The fertilizer ordinances passed by our communities goes into effect June 1st. It prohibits the use of lawn fertilizer between June 1st and September 30th.
