Robert E. Oates, 87, Vero Beach

Robert E. Oates, 87, died May 2, 2011, at VNA Hospice House, Vero Beach.

He was born in Caldwell, N.J., and lived in Vero Beach since 1988, coming from Roseland, N.J. Before retiring, he worked as a highway inspector for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

He served in the Army at Normandy Beach, France, and in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, Bronze Star and three battle stars.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Geraldine; children, Ann Dailey and Patrick Oates, both of Vero Beach, and Donna Kashimoto, of Mililani, Hawaii; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be in July.

Arrangements are by Thomas S. Lowther Funeral Home & Crematory, Vero Beach.

VERO BEACH — While chilly temperatures caused a drop in beach attendance last month, lifeguards are happy to report that there were no water rescues that occurred in January. "It's a great thing," Vero Beach Lifeguard Association officials said in a statement. "We hope people are paying attention to lifeguards and condition signs before they go into the water." ‘No swimming’ advisory lifted for beaches, officials say

VERO BEACH — Authorities lifted a 'no swimming' advisory for three local beaches Tuesday after test samples showed that bacteria returned to normal levels, health department and city officials said. The result means it was safe to return to the water Tuesday, Vero Beach city officials said. The advisory - which was in place for nearly a week - was issued Jan. 31 for South Beach, Humiston Beach and Sexton Plaza Beach after high levels of fecal-related bacteria were reported at the locations. Howle, Zudans win in Vero; Kinchen, McPartlan, Iovino in Sebastian

All results are in for the Vero Beach and Sebastian municipal elections. Voters have returned Harry Howle to the Vero Beach Council and Bob McPartlan and Linda Kinchen to the Sebastian Council.
