VERO BEACH — The Vero Beach Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will hold a fundraiser at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) on Saturday, March 12 at 12:30 pm. The fundraiser is open to the public and proceeds will help fund a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) summit in March 2012 for seventh and eighth grade girls that will be sponsored by AAUW, HBOI, and the Education Foundation of Indian River County. The event will include an address by Dr. Margaret Leinen, the new Executive Director of HBOI and Provost of Marine and Environmental Initiatives at Florida Atlantic University. Her accomplishments before coming to HBOI include being the founder and president of the Climate Response Fund, the Chief Science Officer of Climos, Inc. and serving at the National Science Foundation as Assistant Director for Geosciences and Coordinator of Environmental Research and Education.
Leinen’s remarks will be followed by tours of the Marine Mammal Rescue Stranding Facility with a brief program by the Marine Mammal Rescue Team, and a visit to the Aquaculture Center.
