VERO BEACH — Dollars for Scholars (DFS) of Indian River County will host its second annual “Tie”Bration Celebration beginning at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24 at the Northern Trust Bank in Vero Beach. This annual event originated in February, 2010 in honor of the late Darby Gibbons, who passed away in 2009. Gibbons, who was the Academic Dean and College Counselor at St. Edward’s School, also served on the Board of Directors for Dollar for Scholars for over 10 years. It was his wish to leave a legacy scholarship that would help a local student pursue a college education. Gibbons believed that everyone has the right to attend college and that money should not be a deterrent.
Dollars for Scholars offers more than financial support to scores of recipients we help each year thanks to the generosity of our donors. It also provides the hope and encouragement that’s essential for a recipient’s success. No one embraced this mission more than Darby Gibbons, who was a beloved mentor to hundreds of students and their families.
The “Tie”Bration celebrates all those who, like Darby, embrace these “things that tie us together,” striving to help our young people believe in themselves and the opportunity to find a better future through education.
Gibbons was also well known for his unique collection of ties – many of which were given to him as gifts from his students over the years; therefore, it was only fitting that a fundraiser be started to highlight Gibbons’ ties as well as raise funds for Dollars for Scholars.
Last year’s “Tie”Bration featured over 50 of Gibbons’ ties which were distributed to guests who attended the event. This year guests are being asked to don their favorite ties as inspired by Darby Gibbons and in support of Dollars for Scholars, an organization that has awarded $7.1 million dollars in need-based scholarships to 2,469 Indian River County students since 1965.
Sponsors for this year’s “Tie”Bration include Family and Friends of Darby Gibbons, The Minotty Family Foundation, Northern Trust, The Richardson Family Foundation, Jean and Jim Ueltschi.
Tickets are $100 per person. Proceeds from the evening will provide much needed scholarships for Indian River County students.
